Zoofari 2008: Carrousel Animalia

Santa Ana, Ca. - - The Zoofari gala lived up to its reputation once again this year as one of Orange County’s most entertaining and exotic galas. It was a fun-filled evening under the stars that never stopped! Zoofari returned for the 16th year with the theme, "Carrousel Animalia!" The evening included Cirque du Soleil-style entertainment by Fleur-de-Lis Improvisational Troupe, specialty drinks from Cruzan Rum, silent and live auctions, gourmet dinner by Parties by Panache, and dancing to the SoundBytes. KOCE's Ed Arnold and business woman and philanthropist Sandy Segerstrom Daniels were the co-chairs. Howard and Karin Hall received the Zoofari Special Recognition Award for their years of dedication to the Zoo. Ron and Joyce Glazier received a Special Recognition Award for their longtime devotion. The infamous Chuck Dreyer returned as auctioneer. Actress and animal lover Tippi Hedren attended once again in support of the Zoo. Over 300 guests dressed in black tie and/or festive jungle attire attended "Carrousel Animalia!" and raised $70,000 to help with the cost of the Conservation Carrousel currently at the Zoo. This 36' endangered species carrousel features all sorts of wildlife, including one animal specially designed for the Zoo, a giant anteater!

Villa Park hybrid cars circled the gala entrance and guests walked through a large arch of brightly painted carrousel horses. The Zoo had been turned into a fantasy "Animalia" with animated and playful members of the Fleur-de-Lis Improvisational Troupe weaving around carrousel figures and interacting with the guests. The entertainers narrated a fanciful fairytale of the town of "Animalia" that kept the guests mesmerized. Guests also had the opportunity to participate in face painting and tattooing, sample signature Carrousel Colada drinks and tray passed hors d' oeuvres, bid on hundreds of silent auction items, have their photos taken at the carrousel with the carrousel animals, and interact with "Bindi," a rare binturong or "Bear Cat." A very unusual animal indeed! Jazz tunes by pianist Ron Kobayashi were playing in the background. Opportunity tickets were also available for purchase to win a Shop Til You Drop South Coast Plaza $500 Gift Certificate, a $600 Tiffany & Co. Sevillana pendant in eighteen karat gold by Elsa Peretti with 16" black silk cord, or a night at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel with two complimentary 1-day tickets for entrance to either Disneyland Park or Disney's California Adventure Park.

Rip Ribble, FOSAZ Board President, welcomed the guests at dinner and introduced the event chairs Ed Arnold and Sandy Segerstrom Daniels who thanked everyone for their support of the Zoo. Dinner was served next and the menu cleverly followed the event theme: a Carrousel Salad of romaine lettuce topped with mandarin oranges, dried cranberries, and candied walnuts, served with raspberry balsamic vinaigrette; Calliope Chicken with sundried tomatoes and artichoke hearts; Rice Pilaf Mystique with dried fruit, almonds and raisins, and garnished with a rosemary skewer; Whirligig Vegetables of zucchini, yellow squash, jicama and carrots with lemon butter; and dessert was a Scrumptious Roundabout of Desserts featuring a flourless chocolate cake with a dollop of whipped cream and raspberry sauce, mini key lime tart and grilled lime segments, sliced strawberries, blueberries or blackberries and raspberries garnished with a Chocolate Animal!

Chuck Dreyer began the live auction with the chance for guests to own a part of the carrousel. The opportunities were a $250,000 donation to name the carrousel, $20,000 for a specialty animal, $10,000 for an outside row animal, $7,500 for a middle row animal, $5,000 for an inside row animal, $1,000 for a membership in the Carrousel Club at Diamond Level, $500 for a membership in the Carrousel Ruby Level, $250 for a Carrousel Emerald Level, and $100 for a Carrousel Club Sapphire Level.

There were two other unique and outstanding live auction items. First up for bid was a nine-day tour of the Natural Wonders of Costa Rica to experience the wildlife, scenic beauty, and colorful culture of this amazing country. Exotic birds and wildlife of the rainforests, hot springs and volcanoes, and sea turtles arriving on Caribbean beaches combined with luxury accommodations, sightseeing of historical and cultural sites, and shopping for local crafts provided a perfect adventure. This tour for two included a land package only and was valued at $3,500. The next item was the "Best of Kenya," a tour from the thorn bush of Samburu National Park, to the flamingo packed Lake Nakuru, to the plains of the fabled Maasai Mara. This safari showcased the best of what East Africa is famous for: amazing wildlife, spectacular scenery and sunsets, and colorful culture. The fully escorted tour for two included roundtrip airfare from Los Angeles, luxury accommodations, most meals, and a donation to the Santa Ana Zoo conservation fund. The value was $14,000. When the auction finished, the guests danced until midnight to the SoundBytes.
